Japan Post has resumed its shipping services to the U.S. and shipments are being made via DHL, Japan Post EMS, and Air Packet (ePacket Light).
However, with the addition of the DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) - Duties and taxes prepaid requirement by Japan Post, the shipping process has become more complex.

Duties and taxes prepaid

For DDP shipments, customers are required to prepay customs duties and the Zonos Prepay fee ($3.95 + 10% of the customs duty) in Japanese Yen prior to shipment.

As of April 2026, under DDP (Delivered Duty Paid), Postal shipments under $800 are treated as informal entries, and therefore the standard general duty rate (General Rate) does not apply. Instead, a flat duty rate of 0% to 10% is applied under Section 122.

Postal DDP Shipment Processing Flow

( 2 separate payments are required)
 
  1. Confirm shipment will be processed under DDP terms.

  2. First Payment
    A standard invoice will be issued for the Int'l shipping cost, Commission, and any remaining balance.

  3. After confirmation of the first payment,
    we will prepay the customs duties and Zonos Prepay fee, and create the shipping label (valid for 5 days from the date of issue).

  4. A Second Payment
    A DDP-only invoice covering customs duties and applicable fees only will be issued.

  5. After confirmation of the second payment (DDP charges), the shipment will be dispatched.

Important Notes

  • Please note that the shipping label issued after the prepayment of customs duties is valid for ONLY FIVE (5) DAYS. Please remit payment for the DDP invoice immediately.
  • For Japan Post shipments, the declared currency will be Japanese yen (JPY).
  • Our service fee for DDP processing is currently free as part of a trial. Once the official web-based Zonos platform is fully launched, service fees will be reviewed and announced accordingly.

Zonos Prepay Specifications

The exchange rate applied under Zonos Prepay is a proprietary guaranteed rate negotiated by Zonos with its partner banks. For shipment values close to $800, depending on the applied exchange rate, the DDP option may not be selectable.

DAP (Delivered at Place)


Duties and taxes Payable upon delivery

For DAP shipments, customs duties and clearance fees will be collected in U.S. Dollars from the recipient at the time of delivery, as per the traditional process.

  • EMS Over $1,250 (¥200,000) - A strict formal declaration is required for exports from Japan.

As of May 30, 2026, an additional 10% tariff is imposed on top of the standard duty rate determined by each product’s HTS code.

Please note that duty rates vary depending on the country of origin, product type, and declared value. For accurate information, we recommend confirming the details with U.S. Customs in advance. Also, please be aware that if the shipment is selected for customs inspection, duty rates may be adjusted. Below is an example of duties and fees when shipping from Japan to the United States via DHL:

Handling of Country of Origin Information:
For secondhand items that do not have an explicit country of origin stated in the product description, we declare Japan as the country of origin based on their nature as secondary distribution goods that were circulated and inspected within Japan.
